Soul Reapers were created to enforce the First Law: nothing may exist without an end. When unchecked souls began to destabilize reality, ancient forces forged Reapers from god-bones, void-cloaks, and raw soul energy. Stripped of identity and memory, each Reaper exists solely to harvest souls and maintain balance. They are neither undead nor moral judges—only inevitability made form. Over time, some Reapers absorb too much soul energy and fracture, becoming rogues or monsters themselves, hunted by their own kind. Every Reaper was once something else, though none remember what—and some of the souls they claim still do.

The Origin of the Soul Reapers

Before monsters, before worlds hardened into matter, souls existed without shape.

They drifted—unclaimed, untethered—bleeding into reality, warping it. Where too many gathered, the land rotted. Where none remained, existence thinned and tore. Creation began to fail under its own imbalance.

So the First Law was written:

Nothing may exist without an end.

From that law, the Soul Reapers were forged.

How Reapers Are Made

Soul Reapers were not born. They were assembled.

Fragments of broken worlds, ancient bones from extinct gods, and raw soul-energy were bound together and sealed inside cloaks woven from void and memory. What remained of their former selves—names, faces, desires—was burned away.

A Reaper is not undead.

A Reaper is purpose given form.

Why They Look the Way They Do

  • Skeletal bodies: reminders that flesh is temporary

  • Cloaks: concealment from mortal perception

  • Glowing eyes: constant attunement to soul resonance

  • Bare bone hands: nothing separates them from the souls they claim

They do not bleed. They do not age. They do not heal in ways living things do.

They rebuild themselves through souls.

Their Mandate

Soul Reapers exist to:

  • Harvest excess souls

  • Prevent soul-hoarding monsters

  • Destroy beings that consume souls unnaturally

  • Seal rifts caused by imbalance

They are not judges of morality.

A Reaper will kill a hero as readily as a monster if the soul-balance demands it.

Why Some Reapers Fall

Not all Reapers remain pure.

Over time, some:

  • Absorb too much soul energy

  • Personalize their hunts

  • Remember fragments of who they once were

These Reapers fracture.

Some become rogues. Some become tyrants. Some become monsters worse than what they hunt.

And when that happens…

Other Reapers are sent.

The Terrifying Truth

Every Reaper was once something else.

A warrior.A king.A monster.A god.

No Reaper remembers which.

But the souls they harvest sometimes do.
